Currency SymbolsCopy and Paste $
Find a currency sign for a price label, document or message. A symbol is not always a unique currency identifier: $ and ¥ can refer to more than one currency. Add a currency code or a clear written label when the context could be ambiguous.

Writing Prices Without Ambiguity
Pick the correct character and follow the formatting rules of your document or application.
A sign is not a currency code
A code such as USD identifies a currency more precisely than $. When an audience spans countries, use the code or an explicit label.

₿ is U+20BF BITCOIN SIGN; ฿ is U+0E3F THAI CURRENCY SYMBOL BAHT. ₤ is LIRA SIGN, while £ is POUND SIGN. Similar shapes do not make them interchangeable.
Store numbers separately
In a spreadsheet, enter the numeric amount and apply the appropriate currency format. Pasting a decorated price string can cause the cell to be treated as text.

Currency Symbols FAQ
Does $ always mean US dollars?
No. Several currencies use a dollar sign. Use a currency code or a written currency name when the surrounding context does not identify it.
Is ₿ the same character as ฿?
No. ₿ is BITCOIN SIGN, U+20BF. ฿ is THAI CURRENCY SYMBOL BAHT, U+0E3F. Copy the one that matches your intended text.
Should I use fullwidth $ instead of $?
Use $ only when you specifically need fullwidth typography. It is U+FF04, whereas the ordinary dollar sign is U+0024. They are different text characters.
Why does a price paste as text in my spreadsheet?
A pasted string that includes a currency sign or other decoration can be treated as text. Enter the numeric amount and use the spreadsheet’s currency formatting when you need calculations.
Should the currency sign go before or after the number?
Placement and spacing depend on the locale and the document’s conventions. Use the appropriate locale setting in your editor, and add a currency code or written name when the sign alone is ambiguous.
